The Votes Are In – Assemble Wins

The Votes Are In – Assemble Wins

Yesterday, we competed in Salesforce’s Demo Jam with our events app, Assemble, and we won! Salesforce holds a monthly demo competition with around 5 of their over 4,000 apps on the AppExchange. Each team completes a 3-minute demo, and the audience votes on the winners.

Fonteva Events isn’t new. In fact, over 100 of our customers are already using the app, built 100% native to Salesforce. But because of the flexible nature of Fonteva’s flagship product, Fonteva For Associations, we were able to un-bundle some of the feature sets that our member-based customers love, and package them for all types of Salesforce customers on the AppExchange. Assemble is one of those packages.

Person Accounts Blog Series

Many associations who are looking for new association software have already decided that they are going to move to the cloud. Many, in fact, have decided to go with Salesforce as their CRM. But when it comes to selecting Association Management Software, their discerning process seems to end. In more than one vendor selection meeting, I have heard, “Well they’re both on Salesforce, so how can we go wrong?”

But you can go wrong!

What does it mean to be part of the Salesforce economy?

What does it mean to be part of the Salesforce economy?

At Fonteva, we put a lot of thought into the platform we built Fonteva For Associations, our flagship software, on. We needed a platform that would provide our customers stability, reliability, and scalability, backed up by an ecosystem of software developers, administrators, consultants, and organizations that are all focused on innovation customer success.

Salesforce proves time and time again to be the best choice for our customers.

Salesforce just released a report that measures the impact of the Salesforce ecosystem, and the results are impressive. The report offers some compelling stats on the future for the cloud that re-affirm our prediction that for association software—Salesforce is the way to go.

A Deep Dive into Software Platforms

A Deep Dive into Software Platforms

In terms of association software, we’ve talked about how to buy it, how to get better intelligence from it, and how to use it to engage your members, but this time we wanted to dive deeper. Beneath the features and the software itself, lies the software platform. Platforms are often overlooked by business users because they are more concerned by the features available. But it is really the software platform that determines the features software developers can create, and the time it takes to produce them.

A software platform is the foundation for your software, and it provides developers the code and the language used to write the application, the database used to store data, the infrastructure and accessibility of APIs, and the ecosystem, or the other applications available on the same platform.

Big Data: Don’t Lose Sight of the Forest for the Trees

Big Data: Don’t Lose Sight of the Forest for the Trees

I, for one, am sick of hearing about big data. Yes, there are many quintillions of bites of data floating around in the ether. Yes, it would be fantastic if we could use that data to become omniscient about our constituents. But the problem I encounter when talking to many associations, is that they are still using antiquated tools to collect and analyze the small and medium sets of data they are already collecting.

Many organizations spend hours downloading information into a spreadsheet, then adding formulas and calculations in a manual and error-prone process. All this to report on numbers that are outdated by the end of this process. How do you get actionable insights from outdated data?

How Associations Can Overcome Innovation Killers

How Associations Can Overcome Innovation Killers

This week, I was inspired by a recent Salesforce blog post called “The Top 10 Innovation-Killers—And How to Neutralize Them.” When Fonteva For Associations was conceptualized, we set out to build “the coolest, hardest apps in the cloud,” as Jerry, Fonteva’s co-founder, likes to say. But it was more than that. We set out to truly innovate—to create association software that was unlike anything on the market. A solution that would anticipate the needs of our customers and grow with them.

I have personally encountered each innovation killer listed on the blog. But in the interest of brevity, here are five that stood out most to me:

Wild about Education: New TWS Partnership Generates Cost Savings for Members

Wild about Education: New TWS Partnership Generates Cost Savings for Members

As part of their missions, associations are charged with providing their members with valuable benefits. These benefits may be in the form of products or services. In some cases, members may be given access to specialized information or to special interest groups, virtual or otherwise. And while members certainly value these benefits, they really appreciate it when they are given to access to special discounts that translate to cost savings for them individually or collectively.

One of our customers, The Wildlife Society, recently announced a new member benefit that provides direct cost savings to its members. TWS members will now receive a five percent discount on tuition at American Public University as a benefit of the new strategic partnership between the two organizations.

How Do You Define the Cloud?

How Do You Define the Cloud?
How Do You Define the Cloud?

I have spent a lot of time explaining how the cloud works to both customers and prospects. At Fonteva, we spend our days making true cloud software. I spend so much time talking about the cloud that it’s easy to take for granted that not everyone is well versed in the ways of the cloud.

Nearly every software vendor claims to have a “cloud” solution, but very few have a real cloud. They are just “cloud washing” their on-premise software as a hosted product. Don’t let clever marketing jargon deceive you.

3 Web Trends that Won’t Wait

3 Web Trends that Won’t Wait

As we’ve worked with associations over the years, I’ve observed that website design continues to be a source of ongoing discussion for most organizations. For most, their latest, or upcoming, redesigns will focus on mobile and responsive design. And just when you think you’ve mastered this trend, two or three others are not far behind.

Even in the midst of what seems like constant change, certain web design trends appear to be here to stay. In an article for Fastcodesign.com, Zach Rutherford offered his take on six trends that seem to have staying power. Here’s a brief overview of three that I think are particularly relevant for associations:

Training Staff for Success

Training Staff for Success

Does your organization have a defined onboarding process? What about regular skills training for staff? When budgeting for success, staff training is often one of the first expenses to be cut from the list, but that could cause more problems than it solves. Hands-on training is the best way to ensure that your staff is invested in your organization, excited about your mission, and productive at their jobs.

Onboarding New Staff

Being the “new kid” is pretty terrible, even as an adult at a new job. Simple things make getting up to speed difficult, including not knowing where files are stored, being unfamiliar with new tools, and not knowing whom to ask for help. But there are some easy things you can do to help get new employees off on the right foot.

The Dos and Don’ts of Getting Employees to Adopt New Technology

The Dos and Don’ts of Getting Employees to Adopt New Technology

Even if it will benefit them and ultimately make their jobs easier, as a general rule, most people are initially resistant to change. We just don’t like it. We get comfortable with how we’ve always done certain tasks, and the thought of doing them differently can cause some members of your team anxiety. We’ve certainly encountered this type of culture when we’ve helped our association customers implement new AMS systems.

As with any change, it’s important to recognize and address any concerns employees have about a new technology solution. Even more important, you need to explain the rationale behind making the change and highlight all the ways that they will benefit in terms of doing their jobs more efficiently. And let them know they will be supported in making the transition to the new technology solution. We’ve always prided ourselves on providing world-class customer support before, during and after associations implement Fonteva For Associations.

Ask for What You Want and Avoid Conflict

Ask for What You Want and Avoid Conflict

“Failing to ask effectively for what we want is the stuff of low-grade irritation that, over time, can become a source of chronic conflict and tension.” Conflict resolution expert Tammi Lenski made this observation in a recent post to her blog. And it really resonated with me.

Often in our work, we encounter association staff members who are quite frustrated with the technology they are using to do their jobs. One source of this frustration is that they have not been given or feel they have a mechanism for expressing what they want and need from the technology their organizations implement. When selecting an AMS or other technology solution, we always recommend that associations conduct a thorough review of staff’s needs and pain points. You can learn more about that process by reviewing our guide on “How to Choose Association Software.”

Recognizing Your Association’s MVPs

Recognizing Your Association’s MVPs

Committees are an essential component of association governance. The variety of jobs they do—big and small—help move an association’s strategic goals and objectives forward. Committees also provide great opportunities for increasing member engagement. When members join committees, they are more likely to stay involved in an organization’s activities over the long-term.

Despite their importance committees are sometimes overlooked when associations recognize contributions to their work at annual award ceremonies and other events. One of customers has found a great way to remedy this. Each year during its annual conference, NICSA announces the winners of its MVP awards, which recognize “committee members who have shown extraordinary commitment to the committee they serve on.” MVPs are nominated by the co-chairs from their respective committees.

3 Tips for Tackling Data Management & Marketing

3 Tips for Tackling Data Management & Marketing

“Stop paying lip service to data and start actually tackling it.” Corinne Sklar’s recent post for MarketingProfs.com bears this title. And it’s a sentiment to which I can certainly relate. In our experience, some organizations talk a lot about better data management, but they do very little to make sure this actually happens. Good membership data doesn’t just materialize on its own. Associations need to put processes in place to ensure that data is well-maintained.

Good data management policies and practices are particularly important at time when marketing campaigns are only as successful as the data used to implement them. As Sklar observes, “marketers need to deliver the right message to the right customer at the right time. Without trustworthy data, that level of personalization is nearly impossible.” She offers these tips for tackling your data and setting the foundation for marketing success:
