Association News You Can Use

Association Today is a blog authored by Paul Lundy that talks about the news and insights relevant to the association industry.

Sick of talking about digital disruption? So is your legacy AMS.

Sick of talking about digital disruption? So is your legacy AMS.

Digital disruption is the new buzzword in the association industry. Associations everywhere are searching for new ways to increase revenue while attracting new members who just aren’t interested in paying dues. But a few associations have already found a way to be innovative. These successful organizations are flexible, mobile, prevalent, and agile—much like their association software tools should be.

The truth is that many association software companies have been digitally disrupted as well, and many of them are unwilling to change. Your software’s mission should be to help you remain better informed about your organization, with low costs, state of the art features, and endless options for you to cater to the needs of your constituents. If you just chuckled, snorted, or emitted any otherwise unintentional noise of disbelief, I understand. Unless your AMS is a true cloud solution, those features are simply unreasonable.

Happy 10th Birthday AppExchange!

Happy 10th Birthday AppExchange!

Today Salesforce is celebrating the 10th birthday of the AppExchange. As part of the celebration, they’ve asked their partners to blog about it, which I’ve done quite a bit during the last two years. During 2014 and 2015, I made it a point to select and highlight an App of the Month.

Why? First, there probably is an app for that, for just about anything you want to accomplish professionally and personally. But how do you know which apps are the best ones for your association? As I write this, the theme from ASAE’s Technology Conference last month is still fresh in mind: “Status Quo—Denied, Disruption—Required.”

Predictions and Planning: Content in 2016

It comes as no surprise that content will remain king in 2016. As Julia McCoy, CEO of Express Writers, observed in her recent post for Search Engine Journal, “it’s safe to say content will be every bit as hot as it is right now throughout 2016.”

McCoy also acknowledged that recognition of content as a valuable commodity alone won’t help organizations launch successful content creation strategies this year. To that end, she outlined her “content predictions” for 2016 as well as some tips to help you get ahead of the game in your content planning for this year. Here’s a quick look at two predictions and three planning tips that I thought would be particularly useful to associations.

5 Tweet Takeaways from ASAE’s Tech Conference

5 Tweet Takeaways from ASAE’s Tech Conference

Focused around the theme “Status Quo—Denied; Disruption—Required,” ASAE’s 10th annual Technology Conference drew in a record number of attendees last month. In fact, with close to 1300 total participants, it was the highest attended conference in the event’s history.

We had the chance to meet many of these attendees when they stopped by the Fonteva Lounge (Booth #539). After hearing their concerns and challenges, I am not surprised that association executives turned out for the conference in such large numbers. In general, I got the impression that organizations know they need to be disruptive in the sense that they have to approach their business models and a variety of strategies (i.e. marketing, content, etc.) differently.
