When it comes to business, a new report shows that face-to-face meetings are still king. An article on the Association TRENDS website discusses the report’s most noteworthy findings. Sure, online meetings are great and can be convenient, but the ability to close a deal is so much greater when association management can meet with someone in person. A recent article on the Association TRENDS website discusses a report by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, which highlights meeting trends. According to the report, millennials value in-person gatherings as much as their older counterparts — baby boomers. The report shows there is no reason to fear that younger workers, who delight and indulge in digital communication, will have no interest in attending face-to-face gatherings. It’s important to track and understand habits and preferences by millennials because in less than two years, they’re expected to overtake baby boomers as the largest segment of the workforce. Unless your association caters to a much, much older membership, what millennials like will impact you. “The good news is that face-to-face interactions at exhibitions are highly valued by professionals of all generations, including younger professionals,” the article says. It’s important to note that for most event participants, interacting online has no impact on attendance to trade exhibitions. That can depend on the type of meeting. At a consumer electronics show, for example, there’s no substitute for being there in person and trying out the latest gadgets with your hands. It’s interesting for association management to note that events and in-person meetings are still relevant to the younger demographic. They want to experience events and listen to dynamic speakers in person. They still crave that connection, and that’s great to see. Here’s a quick wrap-up of a few key findings from the report, as outlined in the Association TRENDS article.
  1. People attend events for different reasons. Older people attend events for the programming, while younger attendees go for inspiration and motivation.
  2. Exhibitions were listed as the top way to deliver important in-person communication for job performance.
  3. More than 25 percent of older millennials or young Gen Xers and about 30 percent of millennials say that communicating online has actually boosted their attendance to in-person events.
