By far one of the most highly valued features of Fonteva For Associations is its built-in mobility. Our customers can access their association’s membership data at any time from anyplace. In theory, increased mobility should make teams more productive and effective. However, as manager myself, I know that it takes more than technology to ensure productivity.
In fact, leading teams in a highly mobile environment can present its own unique challenges. As the workforce becomes increasingly mobile, associations need to be prepared to manage teams effectively in this new norm. A recent post to the Mobileday.com blog offered some great tips for managing a mobile workforce. These three resonated with me:
- Stay up-to-date on mobile technology. Managers should stay up-to-date on the latest applications that enable audio, video, and online conferencing; fast and easy access to mobile meetings; secure data sharing; and creative collaboration.
- Avoid the temptation to over-control. In the traditional on-site workforce, many managers oversee office hours, meeting schedules, daily priorities, break times, and even dress codes. It’s not possible to maintain the same type of control over a mobile workforce. Instead of focusing on micro-managing employees’ individual tasks, mobile managers can concentrate on fostering teamwork and creativity.
- Communicate: Managers must communicate regularly with their employees to remain aware of changes or problems and to assess performance, programs, and policies. This is no different with a mobile workforce. Regular communication is critical. Mobile managers can take just as much advantage of communications tools as their employees.
To remain competitive employers, associations must become masters at managing the mobile workforce.
